Wortley Hall Walled Garden is an organically certified kitchen garden just outside Sheffield, South Yorkshire. Since April 2004 Heeley City Farm has undertaken its restoration and use in order to achieve a number of aims:
- To develop social enterprises supplying quality organic food to the local community.
- Provide learning opportunities through courses, workshops and volunteering.
- Provide educational visits for schools and community groups
- Open to the public for events, such as the South Yorkshire Festival and Specialist Plant Fairs run by Wortley Hall, Heritage Days...
Events and courses for 2009
- The following events below are confirmed for 2009.
- Starting Saturday 18 April "Grow Your Own Organic Food"
- Back by popular demand! An 8-week course on Saturdays 10am - 12pm that will cover key elements of the practice and theory of fruit and vegetable growing the organic way. All materials provided. £50 waged, concessions available for others. Further details and booking, phone or email as detailed below.
- School visits for 5 A-Day
- Thanks to funding from Barnsley Primary Care Trust we can offer again for 2009 Barnsley area schools and community groups free 2-hour tours of the garden, to learn about and sample some of the crops we grow, and discover ways of making it easier to get more fruit and veg in our diets. (We are CEVAS accredited). Contact us for further details.
- Sunday 10 May. Sheffield Environment Weeks Open Day
- 11am - 4pm. Find out what our heritage project has been discovering about the past of the garden and grounds and the people that worked in them. Check out the progress of restoring the garden into a productive market garden, and even how to get involved. Further details of this event and others at Sheffield Environment Weeks
- Sunday 7 June. Open Day
- The Walled Garden will be open to the public 10am -4pm. Plants and produce on sale. This coincides with Wortley Hall Specialist Plant Fair. £1.50 entrance.
- Sunday 14 June. Nether Edge Farmers' Market
- We'll be at this very popular market with plants and produce, from 12pm - 4pm.
- Sunday 21 June. Open Day for National Gardening Scheme.
- The Walled Garden will be open to the public 12 -4pm, plants and produce on sale. Entrance to all Wortley Hall grounds £3.00, proceeds to NGS charities.
- Saturday 4 July. South Yorkshire Festival
- The Walled Garden will be open to coincide with the SY Festival at Wortley Hall. Have a look at the progress we have made. Plants and produce on sale.
- Saturday 22 August. Fruit Growing Workshop
- In association with the Soil Association's Organic Farm School. Learn about planning, planting, pruning and picking your choice of fruits. Afternoon session: bud grafting - create your own organic apple tree! Materials and guidance provided. Successful grafts would be collected next season. - Sunday 30 August. Open Day
- Walled Garden open to public 10am - 4pm ,plants and produce on sale. Coincides with Wortley Hall Specialist Plant Fair, entrance £1.50.
- Saturday 5 September. All Year Growing and Seed Saving Workshop
- Learn about how to extend the availability of home grown produce throughout the winter and early spring months. Afternoon: Learn how to grow, collect and save a range of useful vegetable garden plants. Conserve biodiversity, share with friends and save some money. Confront a serious issue having fun threshing! - Saturday 19 September. Making and Using Compost
- How to turn as many waste materials as possible into fertility building resources for the vegetable garden. Also look at creating your own growing media from materials such as leafmould for the raising of healthy seedlings and cuttings. You will get your hands dirty.
